- Connection with the divine: Pagans believed in the existence of multiple gods and spiritual entities. Divination was seen as a way to communicate with these deities and seek their guidance or favor.
- Fear of the unknown: The future and the unknown can generate fear and insecurity in people. Divination offered a supposed means to alleviate these fears by providing information about what was to come.
- Tradition and culture: In certain pagan cultures, divination was an integral part of their worldview and religious practices. These practices were transmitted from generation to generation and held significant importance in their cultural and spiritual identity.
As a wide range of practices and beliefs exist across different cultures and traditions, various types of divination have emerged. Here is a brief overview of some of the most common ones:
- Astrology: Astrology is based on the belief that celestial bodies and their positions can influence a person’s personality and destiny. Horoscopes and birth charts are used for interpretations and predictions.
- Palmistry: Also known as palm reading, palmistry is based on the belief that lines, mounts, and shapes of the hands can reveal information about a person’s personality and future.
- Tarot: Tarot utilizes a special deck of cards to conduct readings. Each card has its own symbolism and is believed to provide insights into a person’s past, present, and future.
- Dream interpretation: Dreams are believed to contain messages and symbols that can be interpreted to gain insights into present or future situations.
- Numerology: Numerology is based on the belief that numbers hold symbolic meaning, and calculations related to a person’s name or date of birth can provide information about their personality and destiny.
- Tea leaf or coffee ground reading: These practices involve interpreting patterns formed by tea leaves or coffee grounds at the bottom of a cup. It is believed that these patterns reveal information about a person’s future.
- Rune casting: Runes are ancient Viking symbols carved into stone or wood. They are used for interpretations and obtaining information about various aspects of life.
These are just a few examples of divinatory practices that exist across different cultures. However, it is important to note that the Catholic Church prohibits the use of any form of divination as it is considered incompatible with faith in God and His revelation.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 is a passage in the Old Testament of the Bible that addresses various forms of divination and practices forbidden by God. Here is the passage:
“There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. And because of these abominations, the LORD your God is driving them out before you.”
From a Catholic perspective, this passage from Deuteronomy reinforces the Church’s teaching on the prohibition of divination. The Church recognizes that the mentioned practices are contrary to God’s will and deviate from His plan for humanity.
The Catechism states in number 2116: “All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to ‘unveil’ the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.”
This Catholic teaching unequivocally affirms that all forms of divination must be rejected. It lists specific practices, such as recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring the dead, consulting horoscopes, practicing astrology, palm reading, interpreting omens and lots, clairvoyance, and seeking mediums. The Catechism explains that these practices are based on the mistaken belief that they can reveal the future or access hidden powers. It further notes that they are motivated by a desire to control time, history, and human beings, and to seek protection from powers that are not God.
The Catechism also states that divination contradicts the virtue of religion since it attempts to circumvent dependence and trust in God by seeking answers from inappropriate sources. The Church emphasizes that true wisdom and guidance are to be sought from God through prayer, reflection on the Word of God, and guidance from the Church.
The Catholic perspective asserts that God has revealed His will through Sacred Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Church. Therefore, placing faith and trust in divination practices that do not come from God can lead us down deceitful and dangerous paths.
